Le Rwanda et la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 GasMeth Energy ont lanc\u00e9 le 18 ao\u00fbt dernier un nouveau projet d’extraction du gaz m\u00e9thane du lac Kivu. Le co\u00fbt dudit projet est \u00e9valu\u00e9 \u00e0 400 millions de dollars am\u00e9ricains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ledit projet est d’une dur\u00e9e de 25 ans renouvelable. Il va permettre \u00e0 GasMeth Energy d’extraire le gaz m\u00e9thane du lac Kivu avant de le transformer et de le distribuer \u00e0 travers le Rwanda sous forme de gaz naturel comprim\u00e9 (GNC). L’entreprise pr\u00e9voit de commencer la distribution du gaz de cuisine d’ici fin 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour le gouvernement rwandais, ce projet rentre dans sa vision de rendre accessible l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u00e0 l’ensemble de sa population d’ici 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Le gouvernement du Rwanda s\u2019est fix\u00e9 l\u2019objectif de rendre l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 accessible \u00e0 tous les m\u00e9nages \u00e0 100% d\u2019ici 2024. Ce projet vient appuyer cette vision que le gouvernement s\u2019est fix\u00e9. C\u2019est aussi une fiert\u00e9 pour nous tous rwandais d\u2019utiliser le gaz naturel produit dans notre pays \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le premier ministre rwandais, Edouard Ngirente, lors de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie du lancement de ces travaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour sa part, le pr\u00e9sident-directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de GasMeth, Stephen Tierney, a signifi\u00e9 que la quantit\u00e9 du gaz dans le lac Kivu ne cesse d’augmenter. Son extraction va permettre au Rwanda de briser sa d\u00e9pendance \u00e0 l’importation de carburants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Ce projet fournira une source abondante de gaz produit localement pour transformer l’\u00e9conomie rwandaise, brisant la d\u00e9pendance \u00e0 l’importation de carburants. Le projet constituera la base pour attirer tous les nouveaux investissements \u00e9trangers et un grand pas vers un avenir vert et abordable \u00bb, a-t-il indiqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GasMeth pr\u00e9voit la construction d’une installation d’extraction de gaz dans le lac ainsi que d’usines de traitement et de compression du gaz \u00e0 terre. Cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 par actions simplifi\u00e9e pr\u00e9voit d’extraire jusqu’\u00e0 40 MMscf par jour. Les quantit\u00e9s disponible du gaz dans le lac sont estim\u00e9es \u00e0 60 milliards de m3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce projet est le troisi\u00e8me que le Rwanda d\u00e9veloppe pour extraire le gaz du lac Kivu. En 2016, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine ContourGlobal a mis en service le projet KivuWatt de 26 MW. C’est une barge flottante de gaz \u00e0 \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 transformant le m\u00e9thane du lac en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shema Power Lake Kivu, propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de Highland Group Holdings, est \u00e0 son tour en train d’achever son projet de construction d’une centrale d’extraction de gaz m\u00e9thane et de transformation du gaz en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 de 56 MW. Entam\u00e9 en 2019, ce projet est un partenariat public-priv\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la RDC qui partage le lac Kivu avec le Rwanda, les choses tra\u00eenent encore alors que les gaz m\u00e9thane et carbonique que ce lac s\u00e9questre menacent les vies de plus de 2 millions de personnes dans les villes de Bukavu, Goma et plusieurs localit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est seulement le 28 juillet dernier qu’un appel d’offres pour l’exploitation de 3 blocs gaziers dans le lac Kivu a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9 par le gouvernement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
